Besides buying an iPad, why don't you get an aPad? It's basically the same thing as the iPad but just 100x cheaper and does exactly the same thing. I got mine at ReplicaPad.com and shipped within the same week. I got it for about $167 - compare that to iPad's price of $500-600!!!!

Definatley get the iPad!

It's an unbelievably cool product! I've had it for a week now, and it has exceeded my expectations in every area but one. It is such a pleasurable experience to hold it and interact with the machine. It is a very intuitive, tactile, and personalinteraction with the web.

Having a touch screen to interact with the web is a very different experience than using a mouse.
It is NOT supposed to be a netbook, so reviews which compare what it doesn't have, miss the point.
This is a whole new computing device to accomplish perhaps 80% of what most people use computers for for all the basic uses (email, web surfing, music, movies (the Netflix app rocks!), games, ebook, magazine reading (Zinio is great), and the news (the USA Today app is a joy to use) it is great.

I have already been finding myself on my laptop much less often than before.

The iWork apps are a pleasure to use. The one area that seems to be more convoluted than it should be, is printing. You can't print directly from it. You have to either email it to yourself, or transfer the file over when you sync with iTunes. But it looks like the 4.0 version of the operating system is going to provide a lot of fixes which people are looking for.

A few years from now, tablets like this will be everywhere, and those who are on computers are mainly using them for work. I knew the iPad would be a big hit when my 70 old mother, after seeing mine, decided she was going to get one too!

As for buying them, you're best bet for the cheapest price is off eBay where i've seen them for $170 shipped or on Amazon.com

I've provided links to both below, your choice and best of luck!!

Apple 13 inch mac would be best. Dell does not compare, its internal parts are not up to par though it looks good. If you were to get a Dell as a gift for Christmas, that would be great. For the money, Apple computer may cost more, but it is the class computer belonging to a class company. If you prefer PC Sony Vaio is a great option too. Sony is a solid choice. A laptop can do everything you have listed as your choices that is why it is the better buy.
Ipad is interesting even entertaining, but it does not have the computing prowess of a laptop. It is a niche gadget for readers, mainly. However, a laptop is suited for readers and computing. A flat screen is nice, but its dumb. It cannot do anything by itself, it doesn't even compute unless hooked up to a computer. A good lap top can grow with you, along with games and education oriented materials. Music is also a viable option with headphones. The laptop is the premiere all in one device. After you are anchored with a good laptop, then consider ipad or other gadgets that compliment and build on your initial purchase helping you to lean forward in the direction to where you intend to go in life.
